The TONEO Method - Self-Control of Tones for Students without Musical Hearing

Traditional methods of teaching Chinese tones involve long individual sessions with a teacher (to "tune" a student's hearing). The question is: How effective are these methods in teaching Chinese as foreign language? Especially in classroom and online group learning.
The TONEO method allows to a large extent to "delegate" to students the mastering of tones and to reduce the burden on the teacher. The following tones are used as self-assessment criteria: 1. Shape and movements of the larynx. 2. Movement and tension of the diaphragm. 3. Real-time voice visualization with spectrogram.
