From the early 1920s to the middle of 20th C, it was the beginning and exploration period of Chinese animation art. Many American cartoons were taken to Shanghai and showed continually, such as Out of the Inkwell, Miss Bobby and Popeye and so on. Those amazing animations aroused the interest of chinese who were at the semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. There was someone who had a really strong belief they could do it and the first generation Chinese animation artists were born. The presenters involved Wan Laiming, Wan Guchan, Wan Chaochen, Wan Dihuan. The development of animation art in that period was full of frustration under the condition of political situation at that time, lack of technical support, and shortage of animation talents.The animated film Shu Zhendong Chinese Typewriter had come out in 1922 after hard try for 6 years by Wan Brothers. After that, some popular works had also been emerging, like Studio Scene, Camel Dance, Princess Iron Fan and so on. This article aims to explore the early development of Chinese animation, record and analyze the influence factors in the development of Chinese animation, such as history, political situation and artists. Through the analysis of the state of animation development from the 1920s to the mid-20th century and some animation works, we try to analyze the early Chinese animation character design, and study the reasons for its formation.
