The author examines the problem of the use and perception of precedent names in discourse. In this regard, the author distinguishes two types of precedent names: names-descriptions and names-references. The former are used in discourse for characterization regularly, and the latter are used for characterization rarely, irregularly, only in some author's specific verbalizations or when moving to the cultural space of another country, and in discourse they are mainly used to indicate their referent. What all precedent names have in common is the ability to act as a cultural sign, that is, to make up to date encyclopedic information about any well-known historical or fictional events, personalities, characters, objects of material and spiritual culture of a certain country, to cause members of a certain linguocultural community certain emotions, thoughts, associations.
