This work examines Chinese literary works of the zazuan genre, which influenced Japanese classical literature as well. We consider the relationship of this genre with traditional Chinese lexicography and, in particular, with the Erya dictionary, included during the Tang Dynasty among the Confucian canons required for memorization. This contributed to the formation of a certain - classifying - mentality, which could become one of the factors that led to the emergence of such an unusual genre as zazuan.
