The article analyses the means to translate proper names in works of fiction into Chinese. Two translation strategies are compared: phonetic and semantic ones. The paper identifies and justifies the necessity to consider the formal and semantic aspects of a Russian name when translating it into Chinese and to choose a strategy, which involves the semantic choice of a Chinese phonetic homonym. Such a multi-aspect approach can help to achieve the phonetic similarity of a Russian name and its Chinese equivalent and to preserve its semantic load. The authors consider multi-aspect translation techniques for translating proper names in A. S. Puishkin’s novel “The Captain’s Daughter”.
