The article discusses the emergence, symbolic filling and modification of the image of the Phoenix bird, widely represented in the oral legends and mythological plots of traditional Chinese art, and related aspirations of the people about a good, rich, long and happy life. Given that the phoenix in the Chinese tradition personifies the ancestor and correlates with amulets from all kinds of evil, he is endowed with the power of benevolence. Being the personification of the sun, immortality, happiness, the image of the phoenix in the art of China is most often found both in story compositions and stylized in ornamental forms. The authors of this article emphasize that exploring the traditional and folk art of China, you can not only study the features of artistic thinking, aesthetics, originality and customs that determined it, but also see the wisdom, desire for happiness and beauty that determine the nature of the people of a great country. Therefore, it emphasizes the special importance for the formation of programs for the preparation of bachelors of design and applied arts by studying the folk art of China (especially in universities in the Far East). Considering the multi-level structure of mythological units that determined the phoenix images, the authors indicate the special features necessary for creating an artistic image in thematic compositions of decorative art, where it is read as a benevolent basis, a talisman. All this allows us to understand the importance of programs that form the professional competencies of future designers and applicants as part of the study of decorative composition, since its foundations are used to work in techniques of hand-painted fabrics and artistic cutting of paper images.
