The paper is dedicated to the problem of imagery of Chinese phraseological expressions. The subject of the current study is the role of key images from the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West” in the formation of meanings of two-part allegorical sayings of modern Chinese. The authors reveal the connection between the distinguishing features of Xuan Zang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Seng and the meanings of corresponded two-part allegorical sayings based on these images. It is found out that images from the novel “Journey to the West” have enriched phraseology of modern Chinese. The characters from the novel have been described in different two-part allegorical sayings, which now can be used for the description of the people with similar features and behaviour in corresponded communicative situations.
